Mather Schneider
COUNTY
I was in jail for a month.
I was amazed at how much fun
my fellow inmates could have.
Once a week we were marched down to a room
the size of half a basketball court
and ordered to exercise.
There was a basketball backboard
painted on the wall, but no hoop
and no ball. One time
the inmates started playing football
with 20 socks rolled up together
and soon they were having such a good time
that the guards ordered everyone
to surrender their socks.I remember the stupid, pulpy hatred
on the faces of those guards
as if we were the worst
possible waste of human life.
I wanted to kill them, honestly,
but what bothered me most
was that no one else did.Instead of getting angry
they just started
playing soccer
with their rubber slippers.

know
now
that the contest
is at long last better than victory
itself (only
as sweet as the face sleeping next
to mine
anyway) i swear
to stay to see
it through, to keep at it
this time, cross
my heart and blow
you the kiss heard round the world
i hiss, i long
to miss

I liked this poem. A good poem to share with coworkers on your lunch hour – or add to the bulletin board.

I like this one. It reminds me of how most people that I know will see things wrong and will not resist or try to make things better.
Good poem Mather. I would contact you about the AD blog but I don’t know how to reach you.

What in the world does amy lee’s comment have to do with my poem?

Dear Gina,
I guess you could have contacted me on the AD blog itself, right?

This reminds me of a paragraph with random line break insertions. In other words, if you string the lines one after another, it is no different than a normal piece of writing depicting prison life.
That said, the meaning/symbolism is very powerful, so good job.
