What I found useful is that the book gives writers room to make their own poems, rather than scripting formulas. It makes clear that the exercises within are exercises, not formulas for immediate success. I was surprised and delighted by the results in my classroom. I could not have expected what came of some of these exercises. A poet myself, I enjoyed the ways in which my students flourished in response to the book. I used this book in an introductory creative writing course, and most of my students found it useful.
